Anthropic vs. White House Escalates Over AI Use

Dario Amodei will meet with Susie Wiles over a legal fight stemming from the administration’s blacklisting of Claude and Mythos cybersecurity tool. The dispute began after Anthropic denied the military complete access to Claude for uses like autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. While the government claims a need for wartime freedom, Anthropic counters that its AI is unreliable for autonomous weapons and current law inadequately addresses AI in mass surveillance, even as agencies reportedly plan to test Mythos for securing critical software.

Netflix is pivoting to a major AI and new content strategy, including a TikTok-style vertical video feed and AI integration across content creation, personalization, and its ad platform. The news follows a strong Q1 2026, with revenue up 16.2% to $12.25 billion, profit surging 83% to $5.28 billion, and a projection of $3 billion in ad revenue for the year, building on 325 million 2025 subscribers.

Despite a 4% overall decline in the Chinese smartphone market in the first quarter, Apple and Huawei saw shipment growth of 20% and 2%, respectively. Huawei led the market with a 20% share, driven by demand across its product ranges, while Apple followed with 19%, benefiting from its perceived good value amidst rising prices from rivals due to high memory chip costs. While major vendors like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Honor experienced declines due to supply chain issues and chip prices, Vivo managed a 2% rise thanks to strong Lunar New Year sales. Analysts anticipate further market challenges in the second quarter as Chinese brands plan additional price increases.

India Drops Aadhaar App Preinstall Requirement

The Indian government has dropped its plan to require smartphone manufacturers, such as Apple and Samsung, to pre-install the Aadhaar biometric identification app. This move, the sixth such reversal in two years, was influenced by industry and privacy concerns related to security, compatibility, cost, and user choice. The IT ministry’s decision signals a reluctance to enforce app preloading unless absolutely necessary, potentially complicating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s digital agenda while the government is trying to attract global tech companies.
