On Tuesday, the United States Federal Communications Commission announced a ban on importing new Chinese humanoid and quadruped robots along with power inverters. The FCC notes these devices constitute “unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States or the safety and security of United States persons”. A FAQ page states the ban applies to devices weighing over 4.4 pounds and is capable of “locomotion, obstacle avoidance, navigation, or movement on the ground”, which sounds like future robot vacuums could be included in the ban. Any affected companies can apply for a waiver to continue to bring products to the US.
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opened an investigation into Microsoft over possibly misleading customers about Microsoft 365 subscription options since incorporating Copilot. The CMA claims subscribers were given access to Copilot at no initial cost for the remainder of a subscription, then automatically moved to a higher tier when it expired. This occurred without notifying Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers they had to manually switch to a ‘Classic’ plan to avoid the increased plan fees.

xAI filed suit on Monday in Minnesota Federal Court, alleging a bill that prohibits apps and websites able to created fake images of people in sexualized situations violates the First Amendment. The law, HF 1606, is set to be effective on August 1st, 2026. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz responded to the suit on X, commenting “See you in court, creep.”

The Financial Times reports Google Deepmind dismantled the team running the Nobel Prize-winning AI system AlphaFold. AlphaFold began development in 2018 and worked to predict protein sequences, enabling faster drug discovery, vaccines, and structural changes in proteins associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Google reassigned key members of the team, and several had previously left Google. DeepMind confirmed to The Financial times some staff members were moved to Gemini-focused products.

As a result of European legislation mandating user-replaceable batteries beginning February 2027, Logitech announced plans to ship a user-replaceable battery version of its wireless mice to Europe, and bring a different model to the rest of the world. Logitech G’s global head Robin Piispanen told The Verge the less-repairable versions are better, saying “It’s not just the cost, you’re also adding weight”. Later in the interview, when pressed about the lack of availability for easier replacement parts, like for wear and tear on side rubber grips, Piispanen responds, “I don’t want to like, sell you a part just for you to screw it up and then be sad about it”.

On Wednesday, Russia’s Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, charged Telegram founder Pavel Durov with facilitating terrorist activity. The FSB alleges the messaging app is being used within the country by Ukrainian spies in order to plan attacks, as well as use a chatbot to recruit Russians to perform sabotage and cooperate with terrorist operations.

Warner Bros began a new test on select iPhones in the United States for a vertical video scrolling feed called HBO Max Shorts. The clips will be “powered by an AI tool built in-house, which helps human editors select and verticalize content by using machine learning algorithms”. Content is planned to be customized to a user’s taste and watch history to push recommendations on what to watch next.

NASA reports a Katalyst Space robot launched for a rescue mission for the The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is currently tumbling out of control following a series of failures. The mission for the Katalyst multi-armed robot aimed to grab and boost the telescope to return it to a stable orbit, allowing it to continue operations beyond the expected lifespan. Katalyst have instructed the rescue bot to begin a series of burns to correct after the failures and “are seeing the intended effect. TechCrunch obtained a statement from Katalyst, saying “this remains an active mission, and we continue to move forward with plans to rendezvous with Swift.”
