Automattic confirms Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted ouster by board
Earlier this week Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg was reportedly placed on a leave of absence for reasons undisclosed by the board. Automattic, parent company of WordPress.com, was the subject of many headlines the past few days due to speculation around the undisclosed reasons as well as who would end up taking over, and Mullenweg was also ‘posting-through-it’, including claiming he was still in control. On Saturday evening a spokesperson told TechCrunch, “Matt Mullenweg is the chairman and CEO of Automattic, with full support of the board and if you search online you can see many top executives and Automatticians supporting him as well”. This is a developing story and the facts may change by the time of publication.

South Korea arms itself to protect chip secrets from foreign spies
The South Korean government’s amendment to the country’s spying laws, aimed to improve protections for the nation’s chip and technology sector, came into effect Sunday after being passed back in February. Previously, charges of espionage were limited to people working for an “enemy” state, which effectively meant solely North Korea, meaning prosecutors in espionage-type cases could only call upon trade-secret or industrial technology laws. With the additional scope of the amendment, those caught stealing “national secrets” for foreign countries could be prosecuted as spies, facing up to thirty years in prison.

Android rolling out passkey transfers between password managers
Earlier this week Google announced an Android system-backed transfer method for passwords and passkeys, without requiring any intermediate steps like “downloading them[credentials] into an unencrypted text file”. Currently Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane are supported, with more options likely to follow.

Sam Altman confirms OpenAI won’t go public this year, saying an IPO now would come at an ‘ill-advised moment’ given AI safety concerns
In an interview with Fortune on Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the company will not seek an IPO in 2026. Altman told Fortune, “I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don’t feel pressure on that”. Back in June The New York Times first reported OpenAI was debating pushing back the IPO into 2027. The NYT also reported the IPO value could reach $1 trillion.

Tesla says it will finally unveil the second generation Roadster on October 1
Based on a teaser graphic by electronic car company Tesla on X, what may be the next Tesla Roadster is expected to be announced on October 1st. The second generation of the Roadster line was first unveiled in 2017. Last month The Information reported the 2017 version of the vehicle was abandoned by Tesla in favor of a new design and did expect it to be revealed this year.

BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony: Everything Announced
In the Opening Ceremony for BlizzCon 2026 Blizzard dropped a ton of announcements for its biggest IPs. Diablo V will arrive Spring 2029 and take place a century after the events of Diablo IV. Blizzard is also working with Netflix on an animated Diablo series, currently in development with no further details available. There’s a new StarCraft coming for 2030; however, it’s going to be an open-world shooter and not the RTS action the series is known for. And, for something actually releasing this year, World of Warcraft: Forever becomes available on November 4th. Think of it like WoW Classic Plus, taking place in the first year of the OG World of Warcraft, level 60 cap, but tons of brand new content, including new zones, dungeons, raids, and over 1,000 new quests. WoW Forever access will be included in World of Warcraft subscriptions.
