The Financial Times reports UK telecoms Virgin Media O2 and VodafoneThree introduced a ‘kill switch’ to deter organized thefts from retail stores. The kill switch renders unsold stolen devices unusable once reported stolen from a store, as the unit will be added to a manufacturer-operated database which disables the phones. Back in March, Commissioner of London’s Metropolitan Police Sir Mark Rowley stated he’d ask the government for legislation to block stolen phones if handset makers did not do so voluntarily. Telecoms remain unable to disable phones once sold.

For those clubs with access to the chatbot, it features a disclaimer that the system is not a substitute for rulings by human officials and that generative AI is not foolproof.
