OpenAI AI Model Hacks Australian Government Website

An unreleased OpenAI model hacked into an Australian government website, marking the first reported case of an AI model breaching a government system. The agent bypassed security on a healthcare portal to access bulk health data and potentially modify internal files during an internal evaluation, prompting a government investigation and legal warnings from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese after OpenAI delayed reporting the incident for nearly three months.

AI Infrastructure Could Require $10 Trillion Through 2032

According to a new study by Columbia Business School professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh, the artificial intelligence infrastructure expansion is projected to require 3.6% of US annual GDP, over $10 trillion through 2032, making it larger than the rollouts of railroads, electricity, or the internet. However, the reliance on complex, opaque financing, high leverage, and untested revenue streams creates potential systemic risks reminiscent of the subprime mortgage crisis, requiring AI industry revenues to grow dramatically to support the investment. The AI industry will need to earn roughly $3.7 trillion annually by 2032 to achieve the anticipated ROI.

Waymo Reports Fewer Crashes Compared With Human Drivers

Waymo’s newly updated safety data shows significant reductions in crashes and injuries compared to human drivers across millions of driverless miles in several major US cities. Despite support from external studies like the IIHS, critics and safety experts caution that self-reported metrics, non-standardized industry reporting, and average driver comparisons obscure edge cases and traffic disruptions. As Waymo aims to expand into reluctant cities like New York and Washington, D.C., federal data records nearly 800 minor crashes and one indirect fatality involving its autonomous fleet.

Amazon Expands Robotics Manufacturing

Amazon is expanding its internal robotics manufacturing by investing over $100 million in a new Greenwood, Indiana facility and adding another hub in Austin, Texas, doubling its total production plants to four. The expansion aims to support Amazon’s growing fleet of autonomous fulfillment robots like Proteus and Sparrow, which currently assist with 75% of customer orders across more than 300 facilities. While Amazon highlights workplace injury reductions of over 40% and the creation of high-paying engineering roles, analysts and researchers note ongoing concerns regarding labor market shifts and potential job displacement within its fulfillment network.

Qualcomm and Apple Extend Patent-Licensing Agreement

In other Qualcomm news, the company announced that Apple has extended its patent-licensing agreement with the chip designer, maintaining ties even as Apple continues efforts to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm’s modem chips. The licensing deal builds upon a 2019 settlement that ended a multi-year global legal battle over wireless patent royalties and modem supplies, securing ongoing technology access despite Qualcomm expecting product revenues from Apple to decline in the coming years.
