About that French ruling about having to go to a designated parking area before you can use your phone. In Europe, there’s a huge phenomenon of people pulling onto the hard shoulder of our motorways to take phone calls.
It’s already an offence to stop or drive in the hard shoulder, unless the vehicle is broken down, or an occupant has a medical emergency. Unfortunately, people insist on taking calls on the hard shoulder. A LOT!!!
In the UK, if you park on the hard shoulder of a motorway, on average, your vehicle will be hit in 9 minutes.
Many roads here in Ireland have been widened from 2 lanes to accommodate 3 lanes, so the hard shoulder is narrower. On those, less congested roads, your vehicle will be hit in 19 minutes.
Our hard shoulders are there for the emergency services to use. If folks need to take a call, get off the motorway.
This is a great point. Thanks for the insight. Though if it’s already illegal to stop on the hard shoulders, you really don’t need to outlaw talking on the phone there. It’s redundant.
