On Wednesday Samsung’s union voted ~74% in favor of a compensation deal to end the possibility of an 18-day strike. Other unions within Samsung have issues with the deal, with the National Samsung Electronics Union, mostly representing non-chip involved employees, reporting the membership only voted ~21% in favor of the deal. The union focused on consumer electronics, covering smartphones, appliances, televisions, is expected to receive much smaller payouts and is planning legal action alleging it was shut out of the voting process.

Volvo reached an agreement with the US government to exempt cars from a ban on vehicles with software and hardware developed by Chinese companies. The blanket ban on connected cars with Chinese tech passed in 2025 over national security concerns and now applies to 2027 vehicles. The US Department of Commerce exempted Sweden-based Volvo, which is majority owned by China’s Geely Holding, and the company will bring more production within the United States, including production of a new hybrid vehicle, the XC60 midsize SUV, and of sister-company’s Polestar’s Polestar 3.

9to5Mac reports Apple is working on a new security feature for iPhones to automatically lock devices when snatched out of a user’s hands. The feature would lock a phone based on signals from the internal accelerometer and any increasing distance from a user’s paired Apple Watch. Once triggered the final feature will apply tools already part of the previously implemented Stolen Device Protection feature: checking if the iPhone connects to a known wifi network or within locations previously recognized as home or a workplace. 9to5Mac reports no details regarding a release date are available at this time.

According to a statement released to TechCrunch on Wednesday, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered SpaceX to begin investigating why the Starship booster failed in the test flight conducted on May 22nd. During the test the booster properly separated from the ship but an issue, currently attributed to the engine, caused the attempt to land the booster back at the South Texas landing site to fail. The statement notes “The FAA will oversee the SpaceX-led investigation, be involved in every step of the process, and approve SpaceX’s final report, including any corrective actions.” SpaceX has yet to respond TechCrunch’s request for comment.

Following the recent full rollout of the Google Health App, which replaced the old Fitbit one, Google announced a suite of changes in response to user complaints. Google will “make it easier to customize your Today and Health dashboards”, enabling users to re-arrange, add, and remove metrics. Quality of life improvements include correctly labelling workouts mistakenly attributed to the general workout category, adding splits to run summaries, and enabling families to migrate personal accounts without migrating or deleting child accounts. Changes to the AI coach include making messages shorter and to “try to find the right balance between positivity and objectivity”, as well as tuning feedback so users get less commentary on, say, a brief walk.

YouTube is changing the platform’s AI-generated video labels to be more prominent and will automatically apply an AI-generated label to a video if it detects “significant photorealistic AI use.” Creators can modify incorrectly applied label flags in YouTube Studio, but the labels will remain permanent in some cases, including for content generated by YouTube’s internal AI tools and those with AI-generated C2PA metadata.
