Headlines

Samsung reported earnings a little down. Q2 sales were approximately 52 trillion Korean won ($51.4 billion) and operating profit was about 7.2 trillion won ($7.1 billion). Both numbers are down from last quarter and a year ago. Samsung blamed sluggish demand for tablets, a slowdown in smartphone sales and strong Korean currency for the declines. The company predicted stronger smartphone sales with the coming release of its new smartphone lineup.

Headlines

Facebook’s Oculus announced its first developer conference, called oculus Connect, will take place September 19-20th at Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles. In addition to keynotes from Brendan Iribe, Palmer Luckey, John Carmack and Michael Abrash, attendees can take part in sessions and labs with in-house Oculus engineers. Oculus also acquired RakNet, a provider of a cross-platform C++ game networking engine, and open sourced it under a modified BSD license. You can get it from the oculus GitHub Repo.

9to5Mac reports that Jean-Claude Biver, head of watch brands at LVMH told CNBC that Apple has hired one of watchmaker Tag Heuer’s sales directors. A source confirmed the hire to 9to5 Mac. Apparently, Patrick Pruniaux former Vice President of Sales and Retail for Tag Heuer was the person hired. Apple has not said anything publicly about the hire or whether they even believe watches exist.

Our top vote getter on the subreddit, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports Google has removed search results linking to a 2007 BBC article on Merill Lynch’s securities losses in compliance with Europe’s right to be forgotten laws. The Guardian also says six of its articles have disappeared from searches. The articles can still be accessed at their respective sites, and even show up in Google search results under various search terms. It is unclear which person requested the removal of the articles.

GigaOM reports Samsung announced the Galaxy S5 Mini Tuesday. The smaller version of the S5 has a 4.5-inch AMOLED screen that’s 720p capable, 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and a microSD card slot. Those specs are a touch below the bigger S5 but the mini also comes with the waterproofing, heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner and Galaxy Gear compatibility just like the big version. It goes on sale in 4 colors starting in Russia in July and will expand to global markets afterwards.

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley reports new details about the next Version of Windows, codenamed Threshold, expected to arrive in Spring 2015. Microsoft reportedly will aim Threshold squarely at disgruntled desktop users still using Windows 7. Some versions of Threshold will be all desktop, while some will focus on the tiled screen or desktop screen depending on whether a keyboard is attached and some version meant for tablets and phone swill have no desktop view at all. And yes word is STILl that the mini Start menu showed off at BUILD will be part of Threshold. A preview version of Threshold should arrive in the autumn and one more update to Windows 8.1 will arrive before Threshold does.

The report details 38,812 targets of National Security Letters, 1,767 FISA orders, and 423 targets of FISA business records requests. Keep in mind a target “could be an individual person, a group, or an organization composed of multiple individuals or a foreign power that possesses or is likely to communicate foreign intelligence information.”

The Verge reports Google has begun removing certain search results for individuals who have requested so under Europe’s ‘right to be forgotten’ rules. Google places a note at the bottom of the page indicating results “may have been removed.” The removals only affect European versions of the search engine. Non-European versions will still return all results.

Google vomited announcements all over the place at its 2.5 hour Google I/O Keynote this morning. Here are the highlights:

The next version of Android was not named, only referred to as Android L. It will get a new deisgn language as will Google’s Chrome OS and Web apps. The new look is called Material Design. It’s very card based, with bright colors and realistic transitions.
